Can Your Child Afford Not To Get Their Zinc?

Zinc is an essential mineral that has functions in growth, development and proper functioning of DNA/RNA metabolism. Thoroughly reviewed clinical studies examining the benefits of zinc are numerous, particularly in children. Below is a list (with references) of the uses of zinc:

  1. Zinc supplementation for preventing mortality, morbidity, and growth failure in children aged 6 months to 12 years of age

  2. Oral zinc for treating diarrhoea in children

  3. Zinc salts provide a novel, prolonged and rapid inhibition of gastric acid secretion

  4. Zinc compounds, a new treatment in peptic ulcer

Interestingly, although zinc deficiency itself isn't a major issue in the United States (only affects 12% of total population and 40% of elderly) it may be something to watch out for in breastfed infants. Multiple studies including this longitudinal study found that the content of zinc in breast milk drops dramatically. For a healthy babies make sure they are getting their supplement of zinc.
